Mathilde López
Artistic Director
Mathilde is a French born British theatre and opera director of Spanish and Moroccan descent. She trained at Central Saint Martins (Design for Performance), Ecole Philippe Gaulier (Le Jeu, Bouffon) and is an alumni of Birkbeck College MFA in Theatre Directing.
She started her professional career as a designer for BBC drama and Robert Lepage while directing fringe theatre work. She was assistant director and literary manager at Theatre Royal Stratford East before moving to Wales to join Catherine Paskell, Lucy Davies and John McGrath to found National Theatre Wales.
Her work is recognisable for its take on space, its irreverence to conventions, its relentless research into aesthetics, surprising associations and absence of fourth wall.
A lover of text, she is equally at home devising new work or revisiting classics. She tends to involve more than one language in her productions and regularly embark non professionals alongside professional actors.
She is fluent in French, Spanish, English and siarad a deall ychydig o Gymraeg.
She draws all her scenes.
